A Note from Meg Wroe
Over the past year I’ve been moved and challenged by the Black Lives Matter movement. As an artist, my response has been through painting, but I have also been listening and learning as much as I can.
I’d like to suggest that we can all take three actions to contribute to a world where racism is uprooted - campaign for change, support black artists and businesses and for white people to do the work of listening, learning and being allies.
Thank you for buying one of my prints, a percentage of each purchase will go to the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust, which aims to ‘create a fairer society for all’. https://www.stephenlawrence.org.uk
A donation will also go to Dora, the 'Iona Angel', who is now back in Uganda fundraising for a Bed and Breakfast, to extend hospitality in an inclusive way. You can find out more and also donate by following the link. https://www.gofundme.com/f/doras-accessible-bampb-project
I hope that people will feel welcomed by these paintings, and take their place at the table.

Trinity - After Rublev - St Lukes West Holloway, London
The idea for the 'Trinity - After Rublev’ series of paintings came about a few years ago when I attended a conference about Diversity in Church. Dr Elizabeth Henry, keynote speaker, showed an image of Rublev’s ‘Trinity’, with 3 white angels. She commented that in most Churches even the Icons and paintings are white. The thought came to me that I could re-paint the Rublev Trinity, with black and ethnic minority angels. I asked 3 friends from St Lukes Church, West Holloway to sit for me and from these photos I created the painting ‘Trinity - After Rublev’ for St Lukes Church.
These paintings are all on wood, which I carved to create texture, then painted in acrylic paint, mixed media and gold leaf.
Trinity - After Rublev, St Lukes, was borrowed by St Paul’s Cathedral for their service to celebrate Black and Ethnic Minority Saints in November 2016, then by Southwark Cathedral for a similar service in November 2017.
Trinity - After Rublev, Southwark
In 2018 Southwark Diocese commissioned me to paint a version, of the Trinity - After Rublev, using members of the Southwark Diocese. They identified 3 people from Southwark to represent - history, story and legacy, in view of the 70th anniversary of Windrush. I carved an image of the Windrush ship in the top right corner of this Icon.
The ‘Southwark - Trinity After Rublev’ painting was blessed as an Icon in Southwark Cathedral on 6th October 2018. It remained in the Cathedral through October, for Black History month and the Windrush Anniversary, and since then has been available for loan to other Churches in Southwark Diocese.
Trinity - After Rublev, Iona
The third version of this painting was inspired by a week on the Isle of Iona, where three members of the group that week agreed to be my 'angels' - Dora, volunteer from Uganda, Inderjit, Methodist Minister from Sheffield and Maia, student from Glasgow. I painted this for Iona Abbey, where pilgrims come from all over the world. I wanted people of black and ethnic minorities to feel welcome.
Dora is now back in Uganda fundraising for a Bed and Breakfast, to extend hospitality in an inclusive way. You can find out more and also donate by following the link. https://www.gofundme.com/f/doras-accessible-bampb-project
