This is the latest icon in the series inspired by Russian Iconographer Andrei Rublev. Its title the ‘Hospitality of Abraham’, is one of the traditional names for this icon. It refers to the ancient story of hospitality to strangers who turned out to be angels. I asked 3 people who came here as refugees to sit for my ‘angels’ and painted on coloured fabric from Democratic Republic of Congo, the country of origin of one of my angels. There is a saying in the Christian tradition that in offering kindness to strangers, we are sometimes entertaining angels unawares.
